The Marine Park was created in 1998, the International Year of the Ocean, as a contribution for the protection of marine natural values. Since then, many monitoring and scientific studies were carried out on this coast. Established in 2007, the BIOMARES program supports the conservation and management activities of the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park. The work carried out under this program contributes to the following objectives:
- Characterizing ecosystems - to deepen the knowledge and understanding of ecosystems in view of obtaining the scientific bases that support the management of the Marine Park;
- Restoring biodiversity - to reverse impacts suffered over time through habitat restoration activities;
- Monitoring effects - to carry out studies in view of obtaining comparable data over time to allow us to ascertain whether the implemented protection measures are having the desired effect;
- Engaging communities - to promote public support for the Marine Park by raising awareness among local communities, key actors, schools and visitors.
