Oceanographic Museum of Portinho da Arrábida

The Oceanographic Museum is located at the Fort of Santa Maria, in Portinho da Arrábida, between Setúbal and Sesimbra. With a privileged location on the coast, it allows a very close contact between visitors and the marine environment. The Museum hosts exhibition “Arrábida: a natural laboratory for the study of the ocean”, offering a journey on the history of oceanography in Portugal and a glimpse of how special the waters of Arrábida are.

The history of the Fort

The Fort of Santa Maria was built in 1676 by King D. Pedro, at the request of the friars of the Convento da Arrábida, to defend the coast against attacks by pirates and enemies of the Kingdom. It was part of an advanced guard in the line of fortifications that defended the coast. Today, the Fort is dedicated to marine conservation, housing the Oceanographic Museum and a biology field laboratory in the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park of the Arrábida Natural Park, where studies are carried out with a view to protecting the marine coastal environment.

When to visit

Open from Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Saturdays 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Closed on Mondays, Sundays and holidays.
